Infineon and Valeo Collaborate to Develop Innovative Ground Projection Module for Automotive Applications

Apr 30,2026

Infineon Technologies AG and Valeo have joined forces to develop a short-range ground projection module based on Laser Beam Scanning (LBS) technology. Their first joint result was showcased at Valeo’s booth during Auto China 2026 in Beijing.

To ensure ground projections remain clearly visible even in daylight, a high-performance optical system is essential. Valeo has integrated Infineon’s two-dimensional MEMS mirror and its dedicated controller into a high-definition projection module, creating a solution that significantly enhances brightness, contrast, and resolution. While the first generation delivers impressive dual-color output, future versions are already planned to support full-color projection.

Thomas Schafbauer, Vice President of Sensors and RF at Infineon, emphasized that sensors lie at the heart of modern electronic applications. With more than three decades of expertise and a broad XENSIV™ portfolio, Infineon is well positioned to enable next-generation automotive experiences. The collaboration with Valeo demonstrates how combining Infineon’s 2D MEMS technology with Valeo’s advanced projection module can go beyond discrete components to deliver automotive-grade, system-level solutions.

Maurizio Martinelli, CEO of Valeo’s Lighting Systems Business Group, highlighted that the joint development meets the growing demand from Chinese and European customers for more personalized in-vehicle and exterior experiences, while also complying with strict automotive requirements for quality, reliability, and performance. The partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies that shape the future of mobility.

Rising demand for experience and communication

As vehicles evolve to deliver more personalized user experiences and higher safety standards, advanced communication and interactive features are becoming increasingly important. Ground projection offers automakers a new way to create memorable brand interactions. For example, when a user approaches the vehicle, customized welcome or farewell lighting, symbols, or messages can be projected onto the ground, turning a routine interaction into a distinctive brand moment that strengthens the emotional connection between driver and vehicle.

Enhancing road safety through V2X integration

When combined with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, advanced exterior lighting systems can significantly improve road safety. By projecting dynamic, context-aware information onto the ground, vehicles can communicate critical alerts—such as emergency braking, pedestrian crossings, or lane-change intentions—not only to connected vehicles but also directly to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers of non-connected vehicles.

Once approved by regulatory authorities, this intuitive, non-verbal visual communication method can bridge the gap between digital V2X data and the physical road environment. It adds an additional safety layer that complements existing warning systems while reducing cognitive load for all road users.
