MLX90520: A Compact, High-Precision Inductive Encoder for Reliable Robotic and Industrial Motion Control

Accurate joint position sensing is essential for the fast, repeatable, and safe operation of robots, automation equipment, construction machinery, and agricultural systems. While optical encoders have traditionally been used for these applications, increasing demands for higher manufacturing efficiency, greater system robustness, and lower overall cost are driving the adoption of more practical alternatives.

The MLX90520 is a high-precision inductive encoder offering 22-bit resolution and supporting both rotary and linear position measurement, with linear travel up to 400 mm. It delivers low-noise, zero-latency position feedback, enabling precise and reliable control of large robotic arms, linear actuators, and other rotating or moving components. Compared with optical encoders, the MLX90520 provides clear advantages in compactness and durability, while supporting standard SPI or SSI interfaces.

For large-shaft applications, the ultra-thin MLX90520 module—less than 3 mm thick including the IC, PCB, and target—allows designers to create significantly smaller and simpler mechanical assemblies than those required by optical or magnetic encoders, which often rely on bulky magnets. Inherent immunity to dust and contamination ensures long-term reliability in harsh robotic environments. In addition, on-chip digital signal processing and system-level functional safety compliance up to SIL 3 further enhance operational safety.

Beyond its accuracy and repeatability, inductive sensing also delivers cost benefits compared to optical solutions. The MLX90520 features a lower initial component cost and a simplified integration and development process, requiring only minimal parameter configuration prior to operation.
