According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Electronics has partnered with LG Display to begin selling 83 inch (approximately 211 centimeters diagonal) large-sized OLED televisions in the United States. Due to panel production limitations of its subsidiary Samsung Display, Samsung Electronics has been unable to enter the large-sized OLED TV market, but can now make significant progress in the market by purchasing panels from LG Display.
On July 12th, Samsung Electronics USA began selling 83 inch OLED 4K TVs through its official website and local retailers, with a standard price of $5399.99 (approximately 7 million Korean won). As a result, Samsung Electronics OLED TV models have increased to a total of four, including 55 inches, 65 inches, 77 inches, and 83 inches.
The Samsung 83-inch OLED 4K TV is equipped with a White OLED panel for LG display (WOLED, which means that the light emitting layer emits white light and then filters out different colors of light through color filters). LG Display is the only company in the world capable of mass producing 83 inch OLED panels.
So far, Samsung Electronics' 55 inch, 65 inch, and 77 inch OLED TVs have been supplied with QD-OLED panels by its subsidiary Samsung Display. However, Samsung's production capacity is limited to about 1.5 million units, so the company mainly focuses on QLED televisions based on LCD (liquid crystal display).
Due to mutual interests, Samsung Electronics and LG Display are considered to have formed the "OLED Alliance". Samsung Electronics urgently needs to conquer the OLED TV market to expand its influence in the high-end TV market, while LG Display faces the need to improve profitability after two consecutive quarters of losses.
With Samsung Electronics, which ranks first in the entire television market, actively entering the large-scale OLED television business, the market is expected to further grow. Market research company Omdia predicts that OLED TV shipments will increase from 8.35 million units in 2023 to 11.04 million units in 2026, with OLED high-end TV market share expected to increase from 36.7% in 2022 to 50% in 2024, with prices above $1500.
