Samsung Display and LG Display are the world's largest manufacturers of OLED panels for smartphones, tablets, laptops, and televisions. Their OLED panels are used in various products from multiple brands. Last year, Samsung launched an Eco with higher efficacy ² OLED panels, which are used for Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable screens. Now, these companies are trying to develop OLED panels that can provide higher light efficiency and longer lifespan.

Samsung Display and LG Display are developing OLED panels using low refractive index CPL (overlay). Place an extremely thin covering layer on the top of the cathode to reduce the light loss that occurs when the emitted light is reflected by nearby electrodes. The currently used cover layer has a high refractive index, and adding a low refractive index cover layer on top of it can better reduce light loss, thereby improving optical efficiency, power efficiency, and product lifespan. However, adding a low refractive index overlay may further increase the cost and complexity of OLED panels.

LG uses a similar technology called MLA (Micro Lens Array) in its large-sized TV OLED panel, which consists of billions of convex lenses that collect light generated by the emission layer and prevent it from reflecting. Therefore, OLED panels using MLA can increase brightness by 20% when using the same amount of battery.

According to TheElec, Samsung Display and LG Display are in negotiations with their biggest customers, Apple and Samsung MX (smartphone division). If they agree to use higher cost OLED panels, LG Display and Samsung Display can develop OLED panels for smartphones, tablets, and even laptops.

Dongjin Semichem, Hodogaya, Labto, and PNH Tech are companies that develop CPL cladding for OLED panels. Dongjin Semiconductor, Hodogaya, and Labto are already in negotiations with Samsung Display, while PHN Tech is located in LG Display's supply chain. These smaller OLED material manufacturing companies have already sent samples to LG Display and Samsung Display. If Apple and Samsung MX agree to adopt OLED panels with low refractive index CPL cladding, mass production can begin.
