Expanding non-storage business, Samsung and others invest heavily in system semiconductors

Jan 04,2022

Samsung Electronics and SK Group are said to be making large-scale investments to expand the system semiconductor business.

According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Electronics' P3 plant in Pyeongtaek, which started construction in April 2021, is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2023. It will have a clean room the size of 25 football fields and become the world's largest semiconductor plant. Like the P2 plant in Pyeongtaek, which will start operations in 2021, a comprehensive production base for memory and system semiconductors will be built.

Samsung plans to build six semiconductor factories by 2030. The industry predicts that Samsung will start building a P4 factory in 2022 at the earliest. Samsung also plans to build a foundry in Taylor, Texas, USA to produce the most advanced sub-5nm (sub-5-nm) system semiconductors. Samsung currently produces power semiconductors for IT equipment and 14nm semiconductors for communications at its foundry in Austin, Texas.

Samsung's total investment in 2020 is 39.5 trillion won, of which semiconductor investment is 32.9 trillion won. 33.5 trillion won was invested in the third quarter of 2021, of which 30 trillion won was used for the semiconductor business. Although Samsung said it will invest 240 trillion won in the next three years, some people predict that by 2022, it will invest more than 30 trillion won in non-memory fields such as foundry.

SK Group is entering the system semiconductor market through SK Hynix and SK Telecom. SK Telecom decided to transfer the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor business to a new company "Sapeon Korea (tentative name)" to be established on the 4th of next month.

SK Telecom launched the AI chip brand "Sapeon" and Korea's first AI chip "Sapeon X220" in November 2020. Samsung and SK Hynix have cooperated in semiconductor memory-related technologies and outsourced production to TSMC.

SK Hynix acquired the Korean domestic foundry "Key Foundry" in October 2021, doubling the 8-inch foundry production capacity. The industry predicts that the SK Group will combine its system semiconductor design capabilities, newly acquired foundry companies, and SK Hynix’s memory business, to expand its fabless business.
