The Korean chip industry has fallen into lack of talents, and invests in one of the elements of industry success.

From the followers of decades ago, we are now leading the global storage chip market, and South Korea has undoubtedly established competitive advantages in the semiconductor industry. However, aging accelerates, the shortage of talents has emerged, which is one of the challenges facing the Korean industry.According to South Korea Times, Samsung and SK HYNIX currently occupies more than 70% of the memory chip markets worldwide. At the same time, Samsung ranked second only to TSMC in the field of wafer foundry. Despite this, recruiting technically skilled human resources become more difficult, because young people prefer the surgeon such as surgeons, rather than engineers. In addition, competitors from China are actively extending talents of key positions by providing high salary.
The degree of aging in Korea is aggravated, and labor atrophy has further challenged the shortage of chip industry. Although the South Korean government has tried to prevent local talents and key data outflows by strengthening supervision, it has little effect.
Operated in Intel, now Professor YU Hyun-yong in Korea's Korean University of Korea is pointed out in an interview. "In addition to supervision measures, we also need the government to carry out projects, explore excellent talents, and make them work to key companies. "
At the same time, South Korean chip manufacturers are also increasing investment to ensure talents, including establishing semiconductor majors in well-known universities, and providing full scholarships and employment opportunities. For example, Samsung Electronics launched a relevant project in 2006; this year Samsung and SK Hynix set up new projects in Yanshi University and Daele University.
Yu Hyun-yong said that these major is temporarily established, but the government should support from a long-term perspective. Because the most important factors affecting the competitiveness are always talent.
In addition to talent issues, the professor of Jeali University gives their own understanding and suggestions on the chip foundry market. Yu Hyun-yong believes that although TSMC dominates in the foundry market, this does not affect Korean chip manufacturers to expand layout.
The specific gravity of the memory chip is only 30% -40%. "The scale of the fundament is much larger, and the demand in this area will continue to grow," he said.
At present, due to the slow expansion of the wafer, the global chip market supply has not improved. With the development of cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), non-storage chip demand is expected to continue to increase.
Yu Hyun-yong pointed out that in this case, Samsung will benefit from the expanded wafer. Samsung announced in 2019 that by 2030 will invest 133 trillion won in the field of OED and non-storage chip. In May this year, Samsung increased this investment to 171 trillion won ($ 146.1 billion).
In addition, Intel announced earlier will spend 20 billion US dollars to build a new chip factory. TSMC has also expanded its investment of $ 100 billion in the production capacity in March.
Yu Hyun-yong further pointed out that the production capacity of other foundry is also a chip design company wants to strive, because they are looking for a lower service price.
In addition to the foundry of the investment, there are also some manufacturers who are watching. SK HYNIX Vice President Park Zhengji said in May that the company is researcting a method of downsifying an alternative production capacity, including expanding local facilities and acquiring overseas manufacturers.
SK HYNIX was established in 2017 SK Hercules System IC ((SK Hynix System IC), currently only 2% of SK Group revenue.
However, Yu Hyun-yong said that SK HYNIX is time to invest in. He believes that it is necessary to obtain technical competitiveness, long-term investment has its necessity, so it is time. For SK HYNIX, successful mergers and acquisitions will be critical. After all, the backpoints in this field must not only ensure production facilities, but also to achieve key technologies.
He emphasized that this is not just a competitiveness of business opportunities, but the competitiveness of national level. After experiencing the chip supply of global automobiles and smartphones, the chip manufacturing capability is critical to the main economy of the source of supply.
Yu Hyun-yong said that many years ago, Intel produced a mobile phone chip, but the company tends to produce a higher profit of CPU. Nowadays, the big environment is shifted, which has prompted Intel's recrystalline, not only because of current market conditions, but also the reason for its internal crisis. Intel has been behind TSMC and Samsung Electronics in the new process node.
