Melexis Introduces MLX90427: A Cost-Effective, High-Performance Magnetic Position Sensor for Next-Gen Joysticks and HMI Applications

Melexis has launched the MLX90427, a next-generation Hall-effect magnetic position sensor IC, offering improved performance and lower cost compared to previous embedded position sensors from the company. Built upon Melexis' extensive expertise in magnetic sensing, this IC is specifically engineered for embedded position sensing applications and delivers 14-bit resolution and high-speed SPI communication.
A Rugged Solution for Industrial HMI
For industrial use cases, the MLX90427 integrates Smart Filtering Interface (SFI) functionality, boosting robustness and safety even in environments with high magnetic interference. These capabilities make it an ideal choice for demanding industrial applications such as heavy machinery, medical systems, and automation equipment, especially in components like joysticks, steering interfaces, and rotary controllers. Unlike mechanical potentiometers, the non-contact design of the MLX90427 eliminates issues related to wear and drift, leading to longer product life and lower maintenance costs.
Precision and Responsiveness for High-End Control
Designed to meet the needs of high-precision and rapid-response systems, the MLX90427 outperforms traditional magnetometer- or potentiometer-based solutions. Its integrated 3D magnetic sensor detects magnetic flux in Bx, By, and Bz directions, providing accurate angle measurements of joystick movements without the need for extensive post-processing. With its high performance and cost efficiency, this IC is an ideal fit for HMI peripherals where responsiveness and precision are mission-critical.
Flexible Operation Modes for Diverse Applications
The MLX90427 supports multiple operating modes, making it suitable for everything from industrial controls to consumer electronics. Two joystick-compatible modes are available:
• Single-sensor mode allows for direct α and β angular measurement using a single IC mounted below a joystick—ideal for compact, high-precision control systems.
•Dual-sensor mode, recommended for magnetically noisy environments, enables SFI-based measurements with one sensor per axis. This enhances consistency and accuracy for mission-critical applications.
Additionally, the IC’s magnetometer mode supports straightforward XYZ magnetic field measurements, making it suitable for applications such as rotary knobs and dials, where simplicity and precision are both essential.
Advancing Reliability and Lowering Costs
The MLX90427 makes non-contact sensor technology more accessible, offering improved durability over mechanical alternatives and a more affordable price than earlier Melexis magnetic sensors. Its reliability and long operational lifespan are especially attractive to industrial and consumer device manufacturers looking to reduce maintenance needs and enhance system robustness.
At its core, the MLX90427 features a high-performance ADC, a powerful DSP for real-time signal processing, and a full-duplex SPI output driver for seamless communication with host MCUs. It supports both 5V and 3V power supplies, operates over a wide temperature range (-40°C to +160°C), and comes factory-calibrated for accuracy and ease of integration.
“The MLX90427 exemplifies our commitment to bringing the advantages of non-contact magnetic sensing into new, cost-sensitive applications,” said Atanas Dikov, Market Manager at Melexis. “Its versatility and emphasis on value will empower engineers to redefine joystick and HMI designs with greater accuracy, durability, and ease of use.”
