Samsung Display plans to continue selling 8th generation LCD devices and fully shift towards OLED

Dec 18,2024

According to South Korean media reports, South Korean panel manufacturer Samsung Display plans to continue selling 8th generation liquid crystal display (LCD) devices, including the L8-1-2 and L8-2-2 production lines, whose LCD devices have ceased operation.

The L8 line displayed by Samsung includes four production lines: L8-1-1, L8-2-1, L8-1-2, and L8-2-2. Among them, L8-1-1 ceased operation as early as 2019. At present, in Samsung Display's 8th generation LCD line, except for the Suzhou 8th generation line sold to TCL Huaxing, all others have been shut down and fully switched to OLED. L8-1-1 has been replaced by the 8th generation quantum dot (QD) - organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production line (A5), while L8-2-1 is currently constructing the 8th generation IT product OLED production line (A6).

Since last month, Samsung Display has started the sales process of some LCD devices through Samsung C&T, including Toptec's LCD unit automatic packaging machine, FNS Tech's 8Y scratch cleaning machine, and SFA's conveyor system. Some devices have been disassembled.

Although Samsung Display is preparing to continue selling 8th generation LCD devices, market demand remains uncertain. Because the industry has already started using more economical 10th generation production lines, the market demand for 8th generation LCD devices is not clear. Market research firm DSCC predicts that global LCD equipment investment will continue to decline for two consecutive years from 2025 to 2026 after a slight increase this year, and is expected to approach "zero" LCD equipment investment by 2027.

However, DSCC points out that investment in LCD display factories for 85 inch or larger TVs still exists. In addition, in addition to traditional applications, LCD companies are also expanding their applications in the LCD field to increase panel shipments, such as VR/AR.
